DAWN M. (GABLE) SMITH

May 27, 1923 - April 14, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Dawn Marguerite Gable Smith quietly passed away on April 14, 2010, at her residence in Silverdale, Washington, after a two-year battle with cancer. She was 86. Dawn was born May 27, 1923, to parents, Walter Lloyd Gable and Elsie Alma (Kallies) Gable of South Bend, IN.

Dawn graduated in 1941 from James Whitcomb Riley High School in South Bend, and worked in South Bend until 1944 when she enlisted in the United States Navy as a hospital corps WAVE. She served in New York and Maryland until late 1945.

In the late 1950s, Dawn moved to California and in 1964 began a 20-year career with the United States Postal Service. She retired in 1984 and remained active with quilting, sewing, and crafts as well as service within her church, Redeemer Lutheran in Ontario, CA. She returned to South Bend in 1990, connecting again with family and friends, and her church, Emmaus Lutheran.

Dawn is survived and greatly missed by her daughter, Deborah White (Craig) of Seabeck, Washington; granddaughter, Jennifer Cleven (Greg) of Seabeck, WA; grandson, Bryan White of Haines, Alaska; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Rummel of South Bend, IN, and Charlotte Aarness of Mishawaka, IN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Grainger of California.

A memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25th, in Emmaus Lutheran Church, 929 E. Milton Street, South Bend. Rev. Don Stuckwisch Jr. will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Expressions of sympathy may be offered to Peace Lutheran Church, 1234 NE Riddell Road, Bremerton, WA 98301.
