Wesley Ray Godwin, 67, of Frederickson Street South Bend, Indiana departed this life on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at his residence. Wesley was born February 6, 1956, in South Bend, Indiana to John Wesley Godwin and Helen [Smith] Godwin.

Wesley, aka “Wes”, “Dooshie” to his sisters. He learned to love the Lord at an early age. Wesley had a calm and giving spirit to all those that knew him. He received his formal education through South Bend Community Schools, graduating in 1975 from James Whitcomb Riley High School. A few years after graduation, he married his true love, Shirley Gray on January 11, 1984. They remained married until his death. Wesley worked for 30 years as a Maintenance Engineer for The Century Center. During his employment, he received an award for Employee of the year in 2004, and in 2012, he was awarded for 30 Years of service.

He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished and took care of his wife and children. His grandchildren were the light of his life. During his younger years, he was very athletic and loved playing the drums, and dancing. His favorite artist and mentor was James Brown. Later in life, he enjoyed listening to Old School Music, and barbequing; he was a ‘grill-master’. Shooting pool was his game of choice, and he did it well.

Wesley was preceded in death by two grandsons: ShaVante Godwin, and Te’Shan Godwin; his parents: John Wesley and Helen Godwin; and two sisters: Vernal Jean Snowden, and Kathleen Bean.

His legacy will be kept alive by his wife, Shirley Godwin; a daughter, Helen Maria Godwin; two sons: Wesley Ray Godwin Jr., Shelfanta Godwin; granddaughters: Talaija Godwin and KáMya Godwin, all of South Bend; grandsons: Rajeé Godwin of Phoenix, Arizona, DéArion Bobbitt of South Bend; sisters: Willa Joyce Harris, Linda [Bobby] Lewis, Mary Godwin, Lisa [Terry] Jones, Angey Godwin, Lesley Godwin, all of South Bend, and Joyce Ann Glass of Memphis, Tennessee; along with a host of nieces and nephews. Wesley also leaves special friends: Scott Herczeg and Sam Bautista, and many other friends and relatives who will miss him.
