March 15, 1950 ~ August 20, 2021 (age 71)
Leonard Ira Swedarsky Sr. of South Bend, Indiana passed away on August 20th, 2021 at the age of 71 after an extended period of illness. He was a lifelong resident of South Bend and a 1968 graduate of James Whitcomb Riley High School. Leonard enjoyed spending time with his family and always looked forward to celebrating holidays, especially Christmas and New Year’s. He was an avid sports fan and closely followed the local high school teams. He also followed the Chicago Bears, White Sox and Bulls. Leonard was also an avid news enthusiast and never missed an opportunity to catch up on local, national, or world news and share his thoughts. He enjoyed watching many of his favorite game shows, movies, and classic television. He also had a passion for animals that spanned decades caring for many dogs and cats throughout the course of his life. Leonard selflessly took pride in feeding stray cats in the neighborhood daily. Leonard was a lover of food, and you would likely run into him around town dining at one of his favorite restaurants or buffets with his wife.
Leonard was born on March 15th, 1950 to his parents David and Belle Swedarsky, where they resided on the former Keasey Street on the Southeast Side of South Bend. On November 17th, 1973 Leonard married his loving wife of 47 years, Lois (Jennings). Through their union, Leonard and Lois became the proud parents of six children and set a foundation for future generations.
Leonard is survived by his loving wife Lois, his brother Sheldon (Donna) of Indianapolis, IN and his children Christine Riley (Charles) of South Bend, Liza Swedarsky of Boston, MA, Lisa Wills (Matthew) of Fishers, IN, Lila Swedarsky (Roberto) of La Spezia, Italy, Lenny Swedarsky (Anne) and Leonard Swedarsky Jr. (Daniela) also of Fishers, IN. Leonard Sr. was a very proud granddad (Pops), and is survived by his nine grandchildren Zoe, Zach, Grace, Marcus, Ava, Brooklyn, Federico, Connor, and Vivian. He was preceded in death by his parents David and Belle, and his brother Louis (Julie) of Madison, WI.
Leonard’s children would like to give a special thank you to the host of healthcare professionals and family caretakers, their mother Lois, sister Christine, and brother-in-law Charles.
Leonard will be remembered as a beloved son, husband, father, granddad, and friend to many that he met throughout the course of his life. His presence was always felt through his tall stature and one of a kind voice that could carry across any room. Leonard will also be missed for his witty sense of humor. He was known to crack timely and untimely jokes during conversations with friends and family. He carried a strong sense of pride and hospitality to those who visited and uniquely instilled the pursuit of education and excellence within his children. Leonard loved strong, in his way. He never missed a moment to seal a visit with multiple kisses or walk you to the door to wave goodbye until you were no longer in sight.
Your presence will truly be missed Leonard, Husband, Dad, Grandad, and Friend.
