James R. Sweitzer, 72, of Club Drive, South Bend, IN, died at 5 a.m. on Sunday May 21, in his home.

Jim was born on October 20, 1927, to Walter A. and Elizabeth (McIntee) Sweitzer who preceded him in death.

Jim began his career on the South Bend Police Department on January 1, 1957, and retired in 1981 as captain of the Traffic Division. He served as security at Century Center until May 1992.

Jim would have celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary on June 17. He married Nancy L. Gradecki at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Roberta (Bob) Cunningham of Muncie, IN, and Patricia (Ken) Smith of Veedersburg, IN; four grandchildren, James and Amanda Cunningham, Heather and Keith Smith; and by two brothers, Robert F. Sweitzer of Reynoldsburg, OH, and Walter A. Sweitzer of New Carlisle, IN.

Jim was a charter member of St. Anthony’s, was a member of the Riley High School graduate class of 1945, was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 235, VFW Post 360, FOP Lodge 36, and was a U.S. Army veteran who served in postwar Japan for one year.

A Mass of Christian Burial well be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 24, in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, IN.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, May 23, in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson.
