Linda Furfar-Plummer
April 13, 1948 - March 13, 2018
ELKHART - Linda Plummer, 69, of Elkhart, passed away on March 13, with her two sisters by her side. She was born April 13, 1948 in Elkhart to Frank Furfaro and the late Blanche I. (Miller) Furfaro, with most of her childhood and young adult years spent living in South Bend. She graduated in 1966 from James Whitcomb Riley H.S. in South Bend. She holds her R.N. from the former Marion County General Hospital School of Nursing (now Wishard Hospital) in Indianapolis. She was married to F. David Plummer.
Linda is survived by her father, Frank (Kay) Furfaro; two sisters, Jeanette Hickman of Elkhart and Carol Ryan (Jim Freeman) of Whidbey Island, WA; two nieces, Crystal Ryan and Danielle (Mark) Bragen of Las Vegas; and her grand-niece, Malia Mae Bragen. She is preceded in death by her mother, Blanche; her beloved son, Christopher; and her paternal grandparents, Dominic and Theresa Furfaro. Also deceased are her maternal grandparents, William D. and Grace Miller.
She loved nursing and began her career at Elkhart General Hospital Emergency Room where she worked for nine years. For 12 years, she lived and worked in California, where she was Supervisor, Outpatient Surgery and Recovery, at Rancho Encino Hospital, and Supervisor of a 150-bed skilled nursing facility in Burbank. Moving back to Indiana in 1992, she was Director of Nursing for Chelsea Manor Nursing Home and Resident Assessment Coordinator for Valley View Nursing Home. Prior to her 12 years at the Elkhart County Health Department, she was a Clinical Director at Alicks Home Medical.
Linda was the Community Health Nursing Supervisor and Program Coordinator for the Childhood Lead Poisoning Program and Maternal Infant Home Visit Program. She helped establish the Elkhart County Health Department Lead Task Force. She retired in 2009.
She was always on the lookout for funny and sentimental cards to send to family and friends, usually with a sticker or two affixed. She also enjoyed preparing and sharing her Italian specialties with everyone. Linda has willed her body for medical research to the Anatomical Education Program at the IU School of Medicine, Indianapolis.
Many thanks to those who helped after her August 2017 stroke - Judy (Vyverberg) Riley, Meri Jessup, neighbors Shari Fisher and Don Rowe; Hubbard Hill and The Courtyard Rehab units, and The Center for Hospice Care-Elkhart.
