Carol Lynn Lanko-Harrel

Dec. 23, 1953 - Nov. 2, 2018

SOUTH BEND, IN - Carol L. Harrel, 64, of South Bend, passed away at home surrounded by love Sunday evening, November 4, 2018. Carol had been fighting hard against cancer for 15 months. She was born December 23, 1953 in South Bend, IN.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Dave Harrel of South Bend; son, Jacob Harrel (Tonya Harrel); daughter, Brooke Clark; brother, Michael Lanko Jr. (Debra Lanko); and sisters, Nancy Freitag and Jan Harrel. Also surviving to cherish her memories are her grandchildren, Katlyn Harrel (Kurt Peterson), Paige Harrel, Ethan Clark, Jacob Harrel, Leah Clark, and Kameron Peterson. Preceding Carol in Heaven is her mother, Casimira “Kay” Lanko, her father, Michael Lanko Sr., and brother, James Lanko.

Carol attended Our Lady of Hungry until 1969 and graduated from Riley High School in 1974. During her high school years, Carol excelled in volleyball and cheerleading. She worked at Travelers Agency from 1975-1993 and retired from Penske Truck Leasing in 2018 after 15 years of service.

Carol had a passion for adventure which allowed her and her husband to travel around the U.S. She was a huge fan of the Chicago Bears, Chicago White Sox (attended 300+ games), NASCAR, and golf. Carol was awarded two Indiana State Titles in 2002 and 2009 for bowling. Carol bowled alongside her family and friends for 35 years, with an average of 180+. She enjoyed a variety of music, especially Classic Rock. There wasn't a tune she didn't know, so we are certain she sang her way into Heaven. Carol treasured her relationships with her family and friends. Carol and Dave participated in the lives of their children and grandchildren by attending every sporting, school, holiday, and family event. She shared many of her interests and talents with her family. Carol was also an animal lover, especially of her cats, Max & Olivia. Her free spirit and unique personality would light up the room, making everyone feel welcomed. Carol had a contagious smile and laughter that was a gift to so many.
