SOUTH BEND - Dr. David F. Hendrix, EdD, 64, died on top of Avalanche Mountain in Michigan doing what he loved with his dog, Gabby, by his side. His death was from coronary artery disease.

Dr. Hendrix was born on May 15, 1944, in Holland, MI, to the late Lucille (Campbell) and Cecil Hendrix, who survives and resides in Winona Lake, IN. On August 7, 1965, in Elkhart, IN, he married Nancy Postle, who survives. Dr. Hendrix is also survived by a son, David M. (Kristin) Hendrix of South Bend; two daughters, Meredith (Tim) Isenberg and Allison (Shane) Everson, both of South Bend; two grandchildren, Rowen Isenberg and Vivi Hendrix; his father, Cecil; two sisters, Linda (Chuck) Nightengale of Mishawaka, IN, and Cecille (Alan) Huff of Poland, OH; and two brothers, Dennis (Jill) Hendrix of Elkhart and Jeff (Mochel) Hendrix of Falls Church, VA.

Dr. Hendrix was most recently a professor in the Education Department of Indiana University South Bend. He had retired as the superintendent of the Hinsdale School Corporation in Hinsdale, IL, and had served as the superintendent in school corporations in Indiana, Illinois and Colorado.

He was a graduate of Riley High School in South Bend, and was a graduate of North Central College in Naperville, IL. He did his post-graduate work at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Hendrix was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, South Bend, and was active in Habitat for Humanity, Outpost Bike and Ski Club, and was a consultant for NEOLA. He was an avid skier, cyclist, golfer and outdoorsman. Just last week, July 20-27, he rode in the Ragbrai, a 500-mile bike ride across the state of Iowa. Dr. Hendrix was a force to be reckoned with, and was an incredible influence on many people’s lives. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him and loved him.

Memorial services for Dr. Hendrix will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5th, in Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 S. Twyckenham Drive, South Bend. Rev. David Schrader, pastor of the church, will conduct the memorial service. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Per his wishes, Dr. Hendrix will be cremated. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 402 E. South St., South Bend, IN 46601; to the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674; or to Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 S. Twyckenham Drive, South Bend, IN 46614.
