MISHAWAKA - Dorothy Louise Wayne passed away peacefully, Sunday morning, February 5, 2017 in Kindred Hospital, Mishawaka, IN, surrounded by her loving family. She was 80 years old.

Born January 24, 1937 to Fred and Geraldine Greenleaf in Omaha, Nebraska.

Moved with parents to South Bend, IN in 1953 and entered Riley High School. That same year she met the love of her life, Chuck. They married June 22, 1957. They had over 59 years together.

Dottie graduated from Riley in June of 1954. She attended I. U. Bloomington, one year, 1954-55.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Scott of Easton, PA and David (Amy) of Avon Lake, OH. There are two grandchildren, Miles and Margeaux Wayne; two step grandchildren, Darby and Shea Solmos, all of Avon Lake, OH; another granddaughter, Courtney and a great grandson, Matthew Wayne from Allentown, PA.

Dottie lived all her married life in Mishawaka. She was employed by the Penn Township Assessor and the St. Joseph County Drainage Board, both for short periods (both approx. one year each). She then became Office Manager for the St. Joseph County Auditor and retired from that office after 22 years of service.

She served on many community committees, boards and charitable organizations. She was a member of both Service Guild and Tri Kappa. Was a member and also served as President for Beiger Elementary and Mishawaka High School P.T.A. She was a member and served as President for the Mishawaka/Penn Library Board, the Mishawaka Parks and Recreation Board, the Healthy Communities Initiative Exec. Board of St. Joseph County and the St. Joseph County Redevelopment Board. Dottie also was a member of the Portage Manor Board (St. Joseph County Home).

Dot was elected four times (16 years) to the Mishawaka Common Council where she served as President twice. She was told that she was the first and only woman to have served as President of the Council.

She was named the Mishawaka Businessmen's Association Woman of the Year in 1994. Dot was presented a “Sagamore of the Wabash” award by then Governor Frank O'Bannon on January 1, 1999. Mayor Robert Beutter presented Dot with two “Official Proclamations for a Dorothy Wayne Day”. The first was January 29, 1999 on her retirement from St. Joseph County. The second was on December 20, 1999 on her retirement from the Mishawaka Common Council. Another “Official Proclamation was presented to Dot on January 29, 1999 for her retirement from St. Joseph County. This by the County Board of Commissioners, Cindy Bodle President.

Visitation will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 201 East Third St., Mishawaka from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Immediately following the visitation, a memorial service will be held in the church sanctuary. Hahn Funeral Home, Mishawaka has been entrusted with the final arrangements.
