SOUTH BEND - Shirley A. Shafer, 80, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 4:45 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2016, at Miller's Merry Manor, Wakarusa, IN. She was born on October 28, 1935, in South Bend, IN, to the late Arthur Alfred and Lottie S. (Dudzinski) Ullery. On April 23, 1955, in South Bend, IN, she was united in marriage to Wayne W. Shafer, who preceded her in death on October 8, 2012.

Mrs. Shafer is survived by two daughters, Dorene K. (Joseph) Graff of Bremen, IN, and Toni Shafer of South Bend, IN; two sons, Sidney (Nancy) Shafer of South Bend, IN, and Norman (Jamie Anne Love) Shafer of AZ; and nine grandchildren, Dena Shafer, Sidney Shafer, II, Stacey Shafer, Captain William J. Graff USAF, Joseph P. Graff, Austin, Gabrielle, Isabella and Hanya Shafer. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wayne, and two brothers, William and Robert Ullery.

Mrs. Shafer was a lifelong resident. She was a 1954 graduate of Riley High School and co-owner of Pick of the Chick Egg Farm. As a teenager, she worked at Yellowstone National Park. She loved her time at “Blue Chip,” loved reading and her quiet time at McDonald's. Mrs. Shafer was, believe it or not, a fantastic ballroom dancer for several years. She enjoyed visiting her parents and friends in Montana.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2016, at Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday and 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
