James Kent Williams (1961)
I am saddened to read of Don Smith's ("Smitty") passing. He and I were classmates at Lincoln during the elementary and junior high grades. He was bright, charismatic, and an excellet athlete. At Riley, where the student body was much larger, we weren't close. He was still vary active in sports, especially basketball, but. didn't get as much playing time. I became more active in musical groups. I don't recall seeing him at any class reunions, although he apparently lived in Chicago during his adult years.
Carol Corley (1961)
I'm very sorry to read of this loss. I remember him from Riley as a very nice classmate and all-around cool person. My deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones.
Robert Irving Lerman (1961)
Bruce BonDurant, Richard Dueringer, and I represented the South Bend and Riley friends of Smitty at the celebration of his life last December. It was a bittersweet event, but demonstrated Don's reach through close friends from college days, from his Chicago neighborhood, and from a local Catholic institution where he and his wife volunteered. Everyone agreed he was fun for everyone to be around, enjoyed his practical jokes, and felt the loss deeply. Our lives were enriched by Don. And, as I said at the celebration, "may his memory be a blessing."
Janice Kay Matthews (1961)
I, too am saddened to learn of "Smithy's" passing. I want to Lincoln and Riley with him.
