Carol Ann Scheibe, 74, of Topeka, KS passed away at home on February 22, 2017 following a courageous 11 year battle with breast cancer.

She was born on December 9, 1942 in South Bend, IN to Milton James and Mary Ann (Reifsteck) Barnfield. Her childhood was spent in South Bend where she graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School in 1960. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Purdue University in 1964 and worked in a hospital as a laboratory medical technologist, certified by ASCP. She was a proud member of the Phi Mu sorority and after graduation, she held the position of an Alumnae Chapter Advisor.

She married Lee C. Hitchcock in 1964 and he was killed in action in 1967 while serving as an OSI captain in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War.

In 1969 she married Robert G. Scheibe in South Bend. She loved her role as homemaker and mom to her two daughters. She moved with her family to Topeka in 1980 when Robert accepted a job at Memorial Hospital. While in Topeka, she taught adult Sunday school, volunteered for the Shawnee County Public Library Booktique, and participated in events at the Shepherd’s Center.

Her pastimes included reading, cross-stitching, exercising, and participating in cancer support groups following her diagnosis with breast cancer. She had a special interest in learning about the lives of anyone she met, and she knew no stranger. While she continued to make new friends, she was diligent about maintaining friendships dating back to grade school. As a long-time friend said, “she gathered people.” She will be remembered as a loving, kind, selfless, grateful, devoted wife, mother and friend. And for 13 years, she adored her promotion to “Grandma.”

Carol is survived by her husband, Robert Scheibe of Topeka; daughters Elizabeth New, of Kansas City, MO, and Cynthia M. Scheibe, of Topeka; three granddaughters, Rachel, Sarah, and Julia New, of Kansas City, MO; sister, Susan (Arthur) Floran, of South Bend; as well as many friends, whom she considered family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son-in-law, Jim New.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Lowman United Methodist Church, 4101 SW 15th Street, Topeka. A visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the Angel Fund (c/o Stormont Vail Foundation 1500 SW 10th Street, Topeka, KS 66604) or to Lowman United Methodist Church. The Angel Fund provides financial assistance for Cotton-O’Neil cancer patients’ medical, urgent, or basic living needs.
