Judith (Powell) Davis
December 24, 1942 - October 28, 2007
SOUTH BEND - Judith "Judy" (Powell) Davis, 64, was born on December 24, 1942, in South Bend, IN, to Farrow and Carrie Bragg Powell. She passed from this life on October 28, 2007, in Bloomington, IL.
Judy attended the South Bend Public Schools and graduated from Riley High School. She earned an associate degree from Indiana University. She worked for State Farm Insurance Company for 18 years. As a State Farm employee, Judy took a transfer to Atlanta, GA. Plaguing health problems caused her to return to Bloomington, IL, where her son had gone to school. Judy was baptized and raised in Olivet African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she was active in the Sunday school, the A.C.E. League, the Junior Choir and was one of the church musicians for several years.
Judy is a direct descendant of Farrow Powell, one of the founders of Olivet A.M.E. Church, and one of the early African-American settlers in South Bend. Judy is survived by her son, Emory Grant Davis III of Bloomington, IL; nieces, Paula Marie Joyce of Austell, GA, and Martha Karen Joyce of Herndon, VA; nephews, Henry Louis Joyce Jr. of Baton Rouge, LA, and Michael Bernard (Janntta) Joyce of Sterling, VA; grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; an aunt, Mary Bragg of Three Rivers, MI; and other relatives and friends.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at Olivet A.M.E. Church, 719 North Notre Dame Ave., on Friday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. Committal will be at City Cemetery.
