Robert D. "Bob" Schmok

Oct. 1, 1941 - May 20, 2014

SOUTH BEND - Robert D. Schmok, 72, residing in South Bend, lost his battle to lung cancer on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, in Michiana Health & Rehabilitation. He was born October 1, 1941, in South Bend, to the late Edward A. and Dorothy I. (Suabedissen) Schmok, and remained a lifelong area resident. Bob was preceded in death by his siblings, Nancy, James and Charles Schmok. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Kay Schmok of South Bend; four nephews, Steven and Suzette Schmok and their children, Adam, Tiffany, Anthony, (the late Zachary) and Melissa; Scott and Shari Schmok and their children, Logan, Dane and Jessica; Kevin and Amy Schmok and their children, Alexa and Brandon; and Kenneth and Dorothy Schmok and their children, Connor, Erica, Dorothy and Jacqueline; as well as very close friends and neighbors, Marcia and Joe Hunter; and adopted daughter, Danielle Aguilar. Bob will also be remembered by the multiple lives he touched.

Bob graduated from Riley High School, where he won the City Industrial Arts Award. He attended Tri-State College before entering the United States Army, where he went to Aircraft Mechanic School. After serving six years as a helicopter mechanic in the Army Reserves, he was honorably discharged and returned to South Bend in 1966. Bob enjoyed working for many years at Wheelabrator Corporation in many different capacities, including field engineer, field service engineer and supervisor. Over the years, he also worked at PiRod, South Bend Lathe Company, Burcliff Industries, Universal Metal Service Company, Alectrico Incorporated, Elkhart Rubber Company, Dearborn Fabricating and Engineering Corporation and most recently at South Bend Community School Corporation and Cor-A-Vent in welding, mechanical machinery, pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical systems, steam systems, refrigeration, tool and die and heavy equipment operation. Bob enjoyed his time as a deep sea welder, building machinery and working with anything motorized. He also volunteered at Unity Gardens by offering his plowing services.

Funeral services for Bob will be held at 11:00 am Friday, May 23, 2014, in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Pastor Lauren Hall of Southlawn United Methodist Church will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 9:00 - 11:00 am Friday in the funeral home prior to services.
