Carol Sue (Traver) Thompson-Szalay

South Bend, IN--Carol S. (Traver)Thompson-Szalay, 61, residing on Kern Road, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 6:25 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25, in her residence.

Carol was born on October 18, 1942, in South Bend, and had remained a life-long area resident. She was the owner and operator of Thompson Upholstery Company and was attending Christian Center Church.

On December 2, 1988, in South Bend, she married Thomas P. Szalay, who survives. Along with her husband, Thomas, survivors include one daughter, Cindy (Mike) Gillam of South Bend, two sons, Michael Thompson of Baldwin Lake, Mich., and David (Laura) Thompson of South Bend; her mother, Hazel (Knight) Traver of Bremen, Ind.; four stepdaughters, Ann (Richard) Kessick of South Bend, Kathy (Juan) Salas of Texas; Karen (Chris) Wigent of South Bend and Cindy (Mike) Jacobs of South Bend; two stepsons, Thomas (Krystal) Szalay of South Bend and Phillip Szalay of South Bend; 14 grandchildren; and two sisters, Vicki Wigginton of South Bend and Mary Lou Whitaker of Chicago, Ill.

Carol was preceded in death by her father, Roy Traver, and by a brother, Ronald Traver.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 28, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend. Rev. Stephen Sumrall, pastor of Christian Center, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel.

Contributions in memory of Carol S. Thompson-Szalay may be donated to Hospice of St. Joseph County, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
