Patrick Pat Arnold Metcalfe

Patrick A. Metcalfe

August 29, 1945 - June 17, 2018

MISHAWAKA - Patrick (Pat) Arnold Metcalfe, 72, residing in Mishawaka, found eternal peace on Sunday evening, June 17, 2018 in his home, surrounded by his loving family, after an extended illness.

He was born in Evansville, IN, on August 29, 1945 to Thomas H. & Martha M. (Isham) Metcalfe, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a 1963 graduate of South Bend James Whitcomb Riley High School. Pat met Sandra (Sandy) Kaye Kalamajski at the wedding of his older brother. She was the love of his life and he married her 52 years ago on June 4, 1966. He was proud to honorably serve his country as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1966-1972. His service included a 15-month deployment in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, and the American Legion.

Pat especially enjoyed spending time with members of his large family and a wide circle of friends. He was a loving and devoted father, husband, and son as well as a cherished brother, grandfather, and uncle. To many, he was also a loyal friend. His delightful sense of humor, strong work ethic, and love for country and family were passed along to his sons, grandchildren, extended family, and friends, leaving those who loved him with many treasured memories.

In addition to his parents, Pat was preceded in death by brothers, Steven and Timothy; a sister-in-law, Sue; and a nephew, TJ (Timothy Joseph). Surviving are his wife, Sandy, and two sons, Steven Patrick (Heidi) Metcalfe and Jason Patrick (Ann) Metcalfe. The ‘boys' were his pride and joy and remained at the center of his life throughout his days. Pat was the beloved grandfather of Trevor William, Lydia Catherine, twins Samuel Patrick and Olivia Ann, and Niall James. Pat is also survived by his two sisters, Jane (Carl) Dyzkiewicz and Sherry (Gary) Hendricks; his five brothers, Tommy, Mike, Jim (Debbie), twins Ron (Cathy) and Randy (Jeane); sister-in-law, Barbara Metcalfe; brother-in-law, Ron Kalman, along with many nieces and nephews.

Pat enjoyed a long career in sales, working at A.H. Choitz & Company, Inc. (John Deere Heavy Construction Equipment) for 20 years and at Materials Handling Equipment Corp. for 15 years, both in South Bend. He was a respected business associate and valued his customers and co-workers. He was particularly proud of his well-kept yard and greatly enjoyed owning and driving what were considered the “coolest cars” in his family. These included two Camaros (1967 and 1969), a 1963 LaMans, and two Chargers (1972 and 1976).

Pat's wife and children send heartfelt thanks to the neighbors and family members who helped care for Pat during his illness, and to his Hospice staff, primarily Bonnie Mueller for providing him with months of respectful and loving care. Special thanks also goes to Rachel Rice from Firefly (a service of the Veterans' Administration) for her help and kindness.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 21 at the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 22, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka. Military honors offered by the U.S. Marine Corps will follow the Mass.

Expressions of sympathy on behalf of Pat Metcalfe may be offered to The Center for Hospice Care, Inc., 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46544. Online condolences to the family may be sent at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
