Sylvia Jane Wiggins (Buck) - Class Of 1956

Sylvia Jane Wiggins (Buck)

Sylvia Jane (Wiggins) Buck September 26, 1938 - February 6, 2016 On the evening of February 6, 2016, Sylvia passed away peacefully as a result of complications related to Alzheimer's disease. She was surrounded by her family and dear friends. Sylvia Buck was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Harriet and Douglas Wiggins. She had one older sibling, her brother, Bruce Wiggins. She went to Elyria High School in Ohio and graduated from Riley High School in South Bend, Indiana. Sylvia married Nelson Dean Buck in 1957 and when Pregnant with her second child (Amy), Sylvia, Nelson and their daughter Penny, drove across the country to their new life adventure in southern California. While Sylvia supported Nelson's expanding career, she raised four children, received her Associates degree, and began her career working with kids in Special Education. In 1979, Sylvia and Nelson moved to Red Bluff where she worked full time for the county school district and continued her career in Special Education. Sylvia had a special gift with these kids when they saw her years later around town, they would always stop her for a hug and give her an update on their life. Sylvia immersed herself into the community and loved events at the Elk's, her membership in The Red Hat Society, and volunteering at the Hospice store. Sylvia's passion was her garden and her amazing roses would fill the warm summer days with their perfume. She loved music, played the piano, and was a wonderful cook. She adored animals and cared for every stray that came her way. Sylvia's spirit was as fiery as her red hair. Her family nickname was "Sissy" but in high school they called her "Wick" - short for wicked - and her dearest friend, Lana, named her "Silver Bells" because she sparkled like bright silver. We will miss her bold humor, her sense of adventure, her glamour, her vibrant creativity and her loving heart. Sylvia is survived by her children, Penny Lou Bertsch (Buck), Chico, CA; Amy Lynn Buck, Fiddletown, CA; Douglas Nelson Buck, Jacksonville, FL; Elizabeth Ann Buck, San Francisco, CA and her grandson Adam Douglas Bertsch, Livermore, CA. She is preceded in death by her husband Nelson Dean Buck, her mother Harriet Wiggins (Knowles), her father Douglas Wiggins and her brother, Bruce Wiggins. A graveside service will be held at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Red Bluff, at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 19th. All are welcome to attend.
