SOUTH BEND - Mr. Robert Lee Lewis departed from this life at the age of 88 on February 17, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Lewis was born on May 7, 1928 in Madisonville, Kentucky to the union of Herbert and Elizabeth (Johnson) Lewis. In 1946, he graduated from Riley High School, and in 1953, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Western Michigan University. He also was a veteran of the United States Army. He married Shirley Gary in South Bend on July 19, 1969.

Mr. Lewis is survived by daughters, Patricia Lewis of Las Vegas, Nevada, Diane Jennings and Marilyn (Kenny) Lewis of Houston, Texas, Debra (Jerald) Gant of Natchitoches, Louisiana, Roberta (Joey) Vanardo of Aurora, Colorado, LaGatha Gary of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Barbara Edwards and Terrion Gary of South Bend, Indiana; one son, Lorenzo (DeAngela) Gary of Union City, Tennessee; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Theresa (John) Ridley of Mequon, Wisconsin; and one brother, Michael Lewis of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; one daughter, Nancy Shurn; two sisters, Daisy Eloise Kates, and Florene Smith; and one brother, Herbert Lewis Jr.

Funeral services for Mr. Robert Lee Lewis will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, February 24, 2017 at Pilgrim Baptist Church with Reverend H. Gregory Haygood, officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until 12 noon at the church. Alford's Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements.
