Riley 1946 Jack Zeigert
April 15, 1928 - Jan. 31, 2018
SOUTH BEND - Jack Zeigert, American Hero, passed away on January 31, at 4:32 AM at Healthwin Specialized Care Center in South Bend, IN. He was born on April 15, 1928 to Reinhold (Pop) and Florence (Nana) Zeigert. On June 7, 1957 he was wed to Barbara Zeigert. She passed away on July 31, 1993 and Jack said then, “I had the best ever, how could I ever have another.”
Surviving are his children, Greg (Sandy) of Elkhart, IN and Mike (Tammy) of Niles, MI; grandchildren, Andy (Michelle), Mallory (Jason) Kronewitter, Corey (Abby), Danielle (Josh) and Nick (Kate); and two great-grandchildren, Braydon and Evan.
Jack was a United States Marine during the 1950-53 police action in Korea. But right before he was to be assigned to an outbound infantry unit, his superiors found out he was a good typist and reassigned him to a supply outfit in San Diego. He spent the rest of his military career hitting beaches in California and involved in cross border raids into Tijuana. After that he spent his working life at Studebaker for nearly 15 years, and then another 20 working for AM General in various positions, as well as being an awesome husband and father. He was a longtime Cubs fan and was so happy that he saw the thing he never thought he would, the Cubs winning a World Series. He also loved Notre Dame sports and the Colts (the Johnny Unitas version). He would occasionally cheer for the Bears in later years. He loved to fish, especially with his best fishing buddy, Bob. Their adventures are the stuff of legend. He was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church where he was an usher for many years.
Visitation will be from 1-5 on Sunday, February 4 and one hour prior to the 11 A.M. service on Monday, February 5, all at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., South Bend. Family and friends may leave email condolences at www.welsheimer.com.
