SOUTH BEND - Carl B. Montgomery, 82, of South Bend, passed away on Friday, September 8th at the St. Vincent Heart Center of Indianapolis. Carl was born on July 22, 1935 to the late Edgar and Evelyn M. (Boose) Montgomery. When Carl was twelve his family moved to South Bend. He graduated from Riley High School in 1953. On June 14, 1958, Carl married the love of his life, Elaine Manuszak, at St. Matthew Cathedral in South Bend.

Carl is survived by his loving wife, Elaine Montgomery, along with their children: Christopher (Joni) Montgomery of Indianapolis, Susan (Barry) Klawans of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, Theresa (Paul) Tepe of Granger, Jeffrey (Julie) Montgomery of Olathe, Kansas and Jay Montgomery of Ft. Worth, Texas. Carl was the proud grandfather of eight: Monica Tepe, Nicholas (Sarah) Tepe, Justin and Ryan Klawans, Brett, Maxwell, Brooke and Harrison Montgomery; and a great-grandfather of three, Norah, Dylan and Charlotte Tepe.

Carl was preceded in death by their 16-year-old daughter, Judith Montgomery, in 1980, along with his siblings and their spouses, Robert (Betty) Montgomery, Eugene (Vera) Montgomery, Harold (Martha) Montgomery, Richard (Betty) Montgomery, and Phyllis (Kenneth) King.

Carl proudly served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1960. Carl retired from Transpo, where he was a Diesel Mechanic after almost 30 years. Carl was active with Meals-on-Wheels and St. Vincent de Paul Society. He enjoyed participating in Senior League softball and getting together with friends on Wednesday mornings for coffee at McDonalds. Carl's greatest joy came from watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their many activities. A highlight for Carl was the annual summer Wiffle Ball tournament in which his family has participated for 30 years and counting.

Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, September 12th in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka from 4:00 until 8:00PM. A Rosary will be recited at 4:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the St. Matthew Cathedral at 10:00AM on Wednesday, September 13th with Fr. Terry Fisher. He will be laid to rest in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, in Osceola. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Meals-on-Wheels, 121 W. Garst St., South Bend, IN 46601 or to St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Matthew Chapter, 1701 Miami St., South Bend, IN 46613.
