SOUTH BEND - Harold E. “Gene” Moberg, 86, of South Bend, IN passed away at 12:45 a.m. Monday, February 13, 2017 at his home. He was born on September 29, 1930 in North Liberty, IN to the late Roy and Veva (Williams) Moberg. On March 20, 1954 in North Liberty, IN he married the former Veleda Mae Newland.

Gene is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Veleda M. Moberg; two sisters, Alice Pillow of Granger, IN and Delores (Frank) Morrison of Warren, OH; brother-in-law, Marshall Vervynckt; a host of nieces and nephews to whom he was a beloved Uncle; and best friends, Burt and Betty Miller. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janice Vervynckt and brother-in-law, Jack Pillow. He was fortunate to have a wonderful, caring caregiver, Rose Gachanja, who made it possible for him to spend his remaining years at home. A special thanks to all of the people of Great Lakes Hospice, who made his last days very comfortable for both him and his family.

Gene was a lifelong area resident. He graduated from Riley High School in South Bend, and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He worked for Bendix in South Bend, where he met the love of his life, Veleda Newland Moberg. He worked in the contracts department for Dodge. He was a member of Community Congregational Church where he sang in the choir, something he loved to do. He had a beautiful voice and in his younger years, sang with his sisters, Janice and Delores at church, weddings and at family get togethers. Gene loved animals and showing off his new cars.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Community Congregational Church, 19671 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN. Graveside services and burial will follow at Eastlawn Cemetery, North Liberty, IN. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN and one hour prior to the services at church on Thursday.
