William L. Fuerbringer, 81, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 9:55 a.m. Monday, August 23, 2021 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.  William was born on June 15, 1940 in South Bend to William and Dorothy (Anderson) Fuerbringer, and was a lifelong resident. On August 21, 1965, in Christ the King Catholic Church, with his wife’s cousin Rev. John P. Kennelly officiating, he married Margo Gerharz, who preceded him in death on October 25, 2015. 

William is survived by two daughters, Laura Patrick of Plymouth, Indiana and Peggy (Coley McIntee) Fuerbringer of Mishawaka, Indiana; two sons, William (Deeann) Fuerbringer of Elkhart, Indiana and Daniel Fuerbringer of South Bend, Indiana; nine grandchildren, Jacob, Ryun, Abby, Elise, Julia, Nick, Sydney, Riley and Reese; one great-grandchild, Ryder; and his brother, Robert Fuerbringer of Tennesee. William was a 1958 graduate of Riley High School. 

He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Purdue University and his Master’s Degree in History from the University of Notre Dame.  William taught from 1962 -1999 at several South Bend Schools, including LaSalle, Central High School and Clay High School where he taught Social Studies and English.  He retired from teaching in 1999.  William was a wrestling coach for several years and football coach for many years, even after retiring from teaching. He coached football for 46 years including 5 years as the head coach for Clay High School in the 1980’s.  He enjoyed playing and teaching Chess.  He taught Chess to 7th and 8th grade students for Chess Club at Clay Middle School.

William loved to play sports, especially racquetball, tennis and golf, and there was a time in his life where he enjoyed hunting.  He enjoyed keeping fit.  William enjoyed his computer and was always learning something new.  He was a wonderful provider who always worked hard for his family.  He loved being a grandpa and spending time attended at his grandchildren’s  activities.

William's family is planning to have a visitation and Memorial Service in September.  Visitation and service times will be posted when available.
