Riley 1939 Eleanor (Drewer) Block

NILES - Eleanor Block, 96, of Niles, MI passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, following extended health problems, with her son by her side, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Funeral Home in St. Joseph, MI.

Eleanor was born in South Bend, IN on August 21, 1920. She lived most of her life in Niles, MI. Eleanor's parents were the late Arthur and Anna Drewer. She was a 1939 graduate of James Whitcomb Riley High School in South Bend. She received her diploma from Saint Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. Eleanor married Herbert W. Block in 1948; he preceded her in death in 1991 after celebrating 43 years of marriage. They had one son, William H. Block; he survives in St. Joseph, MI. Eleanor's other survivors include her beloved nephew, LeRoy W. Rupert of Niles, MI; her brother, Arthur (Patsy) Drewer of Mendon, MI; and her sister, Virginia Shrider of Longview, WA. Eleanor was a Registered Nurse from 1942-2008. Her health care service included employment at Saint Joseph Hospital in South Bend, IN, Pawating Hospital in Niles, MI, and more than 25 years at Niles Medical Center. Eleanor enjoyed shopping, antiques, cooking and fishing.

In accordance with Eleanor's wishes, she has been cremated and private family services will be held. Her final resting place will be at Spring Run Cemetery in Scottdale, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, of which she was a member, 1340 Sycamore St., Niles, MI 49120.
