Gene Stoner April 19, 1929 - April 29, 2014 GRANGER - Gene Roland Stoner, 85, who spent thirty-six joyous and loving years with his wife, Sharron, passed away at Hospice House, South Bend, at 1:58 AM April 29, 2014. The eighth of nine children, he was born on April 19, 1929, in South Bend, to Joseph and Eudora Stoner.

After graduation from Riley High School in South Bend, he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was chosen to participate in the Honor Guard and played on the Marine Corps baseball team.

After leaving the Marines, the entrepreneur in Gene emerged and he became co-owner of Stoner's Grocery (with his brothers) and later owned and ran (with his brother, Dale) Stoner's Restaurant. He subsequently owned and ran several food service businesses. He was a lifelong and avid student of finance and business, and spent many hours successfully managing his and Sharron's financial affairs in retirement. Gene never lost his love of baseball and relished the time spent watching it on TV. He was also a lifelong fan of the Lawrence Welk Show. He loved to play the card game Euchre and played it well.

Along the way he also raised his nephew, Steven Helvey. Throughout his years, Gene was a devout Christian and a member of the First Church of Christ Scientists, Boston, MA.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Sharron; his beloved son, Gene "Geno" Rodney Stoner of Carlsbad, California; his brother, Dale (Dorothy) Stoner; and sisters-in-law, Carol Hummer and Barbara Schlemmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Lee Stoner, Bob Stoner and Joe Stoner; and his sisters, Rowena Stoner, Reatha "Tete" Newman, Ruthie Easterday and Joan Overmyer.

Gene will be greatly missed by his family, his many nieces and nephews, and friends. Gene wished to be cremated.

A memorial service will be held at Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, IN 46615 at 10:30 AM on Thursday, May 1, 2014, where friends may gather with the family from 10 AM until time of services. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
