SOUTH BEND - Norton B. Mumford, 89, passed away at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. Norton was born December 27, 1917, in Chicago, IL, to the late Charles and Irene (Norton) Mumford. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Ramsbey; and by a brother, Vernard Mumford.

Norton is survived by his wife, Joan (Zimmerman) of 66 years. He is also survived by two sons, James (Mary Beth) Mumford and John (Rosanne) Mumford, both of South Bend; three sisters, Arlene (Stanley) Mrozcek of Mishawaka, Edith (Roger) Mumby of Mishawaka and Shirley (Dick) Rockhill of Winter Park, FL; two brothers, Donald (Liz) Mumford of Auburn, IN, and Roy (Wanda) Mumford of Mishawaka; two grandsons, James Mumford and Thomas Mumford, both of South Bend.

Norton moved to South Bend in 1919 and graduated from Riley High School in 1936.

Norton had worked at Bendix Corp. assembling aircraft carburetors, and started a small grocery store near the corner of Ewing Avenue and High Street. He was drafted during World War II into the Air Force Officers training program. He served as a ball turret gunner on B24 bombers, and in radio and radar repair. He had attained the rank of sergeant when honorably discharged at the end of the war. Upon returning to South Bend,

Norton opened Mumford's Food Market at 626 Portage Ave., South Bend, which he owned for 34 years. He also worked as an employment counselor at Snelling and Snelling, retiring as office manager. He was a member of the Toastmaster's Club, and served on the board of directors for five years for Somer Square. After retirement, Norton continued to work part time at Harvey's Hardware, Minkler's Hardware, Frank's Nursery, and K-Mart Gardenshop, finally retiring at age 86.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, with Rev. Michael Heintz officiating, with entombment to follow at Riverview Cemetery. Family and friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
