Betty (Keith) Barnes

SOUTH BEND - Betty Barnes, 82, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at Hospice House. Betty was born Betty Gale Keith in Stockton, California, July 11, 1925, to Kenneth and Myrtle Keith. Betty's family moved to Evansville, Indiana, where she spent most of her childhood until moving to South Bend in 1943. She graduated from Riley High School that same year.

On March 20, 1945, she married Richard Barnes. Together they raised two daughters, Candy Pierce of Louisville, KY, and Debbie Barnes of Mishawaka. They also have three grandchildren, Julie McClanahan of New Albany, IN, Jackie Nelson of Mishawaka and Jon Pitts of Anderson, IN. She has five great-grandchildren, Chad and Trevor McClanahan, Brandon and Ethan Nelson, and Samantha Pitts. Betty's family was her pride and joy and extended to include her nieces and nephews, Char Mominee, Collette Schuch, Jana Horvath and Ted Moore in addition to other family members and friends.

Betty worked at several area businesses as a bookkeeper and a secretary including Gateley's Clothing Store, Northwestern Insurance Company, Maza Insurance Agency, and Waterfield Mortgage. She also worked as the office manager at South Bend Turners where she and Richard have been members since 1958.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Dorothy (Wayne) Mominee, Jack Keith, and Ted (Jan) Moore. She is survived by her loving husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and close friends. Other things may change us, but we start and end with family.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. this evening and one hour before services on Saturday in Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 North Main Street in Mishawaka. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
