Mary Ellen (Miller) Hutchins
February 7, 1925 ~ August 30, 2022 (age 97)
Mary Ellen Miller Hutchins, 97, of South Bend, went home to be with her Lord on August 30, 2022 at Southfield Assisted Living. Mary was born on February 7, 1925, in South Bend to Lily and Ralph Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Joane. She graduated from Riley High School in 1943.
She met her husband Russell “Bud” at the roller-skating rink in 1944 and they were married in South Bend on October 6, 1945. Russell preceded her in death in 2010 after 65 years of marriage.
They had three children, Larry Hutchins (Tahni), Jan Humes (Chuck) and Julie Davis (Brad). She leaves behind several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She lived most of her life in the South Bend area. Mary Ellen was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Mishawaka. Over the years, she worked faithfully in children’s ministries, women’s ministries, choir, and regularly visited the sick and lonely. The Hutchins’ home was always open to anyone…missionaries, singing groups, speakers, game night, and family gatherings. Mary had the gift of hospitality and used it often for the glory of the Lord. She was a strong, Proverbs 31, beautiful woman of faith, an example of the admirable Christian wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Mary was an avid flower gardener and loved being a homemaker for the most of her life. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Services for Mary Ellen will be Saturday, September 3, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation 1 hour prior to the service at Palmer Funeral Home, 3910 N. Main Street, Mishawaka, IN 46545. Officiating will be Pastor Brad Davis, Mary’s son- in- law. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Gardens, Granger, Indiana.
