James H Col Lahey - Class Of 1934 VIEW PROFILE

James H Col Lahey

James Lahey died December 28, 2000 in South Bend, Indiana.  He is buried in Highland Cemetery.

I am the only one of my parents' children that was born in Texas, everyone else was born in Indiana. Dad's family came to Indiana in 1837, and mom's got there around 1865.  Mom and Dad never intended to leave Indiana as all their family and friends were there, but in 1950 two of their boys got polio. Freddie was 4 and Jerry Jr. was 9. After a week's illness, Freddie passed away. Jerry Jr. lived but was in the hospital 2 1/2 months. When he was released the doctors said that if they stayed in Indiana he would most likely become crippled. He grew up fine and never showed any signs of ever having polio. They needed to relocate to a warmer climate. They sold everything in Indiana and moved to Dallas, Texas with their 4 children. They later moved to Ft. Worth, Texas where I was born.

Mom always thought they would return to Indiana but in the late 70s she realized that all her family was in Texas now as her 5 children had blessed her with 13 grandkids, and most of her Indiana family had passed. While she loved Texas, I know that a part of her heart stayed in Indiana.
