Gladys J. VanDePutte

June 19, 1922 - July 24, 2018

SOUTH BEND, IN - It is with great sadness that the family of Gladys Josephine VanDePutte (nee Odor) announces her passing on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at the Healthwin Specialized Care in South Bend, at the age of 96 years.

A native of South Bend, Indiana, Gladys was born on June 19, 1922 to Arthur Odor and Blanche Odor (nee Nowicki). She graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School in 1939. After high school, she attended South Bend College of Commerce and was employed as a court stenographer for the Superior Court. On February 15, 1947, she married George VanDePutte in Jacksonville, Florida.

She is survived by her eight children: Patricia (Raymond) DeLuca of Ocala, Florida, Scott (Daveda) VanDePutte of South Bend, Kim (Charles) Miller of Houston, Texas, Mark (Trish) VanDePutte of Mishawaka, Indiana, Dave (Karen) VanDePutte of Columbus, Indiana, Chris (Karen) VanDePutte of Richardson, Texas, Tina Krenek of Houston, Texas, and Sue (Kenneth) Newland of South Bend. She was blessed with 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Jerry (Sharon) Olden of Scottsdale, Arizona. Preceding her in death were her loving husband, George VanDePutte of South Bend; her sister, Doris Rutkowski of Elkhart, Indiana; and a grandson, Neil VanDePutte of Toms River, New Jersey, along with many of her bridge playing partners over the years.

Gladys was a loving, devoted wife and mother, always putting her family before herself. She loved traveling to visit her children, in addition to traveling to Ireland, Italy, and Panama. She was warmhearted, yet feisty, and spoke her mind - especially when it came to her children and grandchildren - and she made certain to attend special events to laud a grandchild's milestone accomplishments. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Matthew Cathedral and more recently, Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, August 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2822 Corpus Christi Drive, South Bend, IN. Family members will welcome friends at a visitation on Thursday, August 9, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN. Her ashes will be placed next to her husband at Southlawn Cemetery in South Bend.
