Chief Dan D. Thompson, Sr. Feb. 14, 1940 - August 10, 2018 SOUTH BEND, IN - Dan D. Thompson, Sr., 78, of Corey Lake in Three Rivers, MI and Brooksville, FL, formerly of South Bend and Avon Park, FL passed away peacefully with family and friends by his side at his summer home on Corey Lake. Dan graduated from South Bend Riley High School in 1958. From 1960 to 1966 he served in the Marine Reserves. On September 9, 1961 he married the love of his life, Pat Was at St. Stan's parish in South Bend. Dan joined the South Bend Police Department in 1962, retiring at the rank of Chief in 1984. While on the force he was also the Founding Commander of the SWAT Team. After retiring from the police department he was employed by New Energy to establish the security department, later working on the shop floor. He retired from New Energy after 20 years of service. Dan's favorite pastime was spending time with his family and friends at both his summer home on Corey Lake and winter home in Florida. He was born on Valentine's Day 1940 to the late Wallace and Grace Inez (Nichols) Thompson in South Bend and was preceded in death by his brother, William (Don) Thompson. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Pat along with their three children, Dan D. (Jennifer Poole) Thompson, Jr. of South Bend, Sue (Craig Barrier) Badowski of Three Rivers, and Amy (Scott) Yoste of Celina, TX; his grandchildren, Andrea (Frank) Wittendorf, Robert (Katy McNamara) Badowski, Dan D. III, Ryan and Sarah Thompson all of South Bend; one great-grandchild, eight step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; and dear friend, Mike Brady. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-7pm at the McGann Hay Funerals / Cremations / Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter off Cherry Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am, Wednesday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 645 S. Douglas St., in Three Rivers, MI, Fr. Gene Wegner, OFM, officiating. An additional visitation will be held from 10-11am in the church prior to Mass. Cremation will take place at McGann Hay's, American Cremation Society in South Bend.
