James W. Brothers

March 1, 1926 - Sept. 1, 2018

MISHAWAKA, IN - James W. Brothers, 92, of Mishawaka, Indiana passed away Saturday, September 1, 2018. Jim was born on March 1, 1926 in Valparaiso, Indiana to Owen F. and Laverne (Lauderback) Brothers. He had lived in the South Bend/Mishawaka area most of his life. Jim attended Riley High School and served with the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. Following the War, he worked at Studebaker for a few years and then became a machinist at Precision Piece Parts from which he retired after 35 years in 1988. Jim enjoyed playing baseball and football in his school years. During his adult years, he was an avid bowler and golfer. He was one of the founders of North Side Little League in Mishawaka where he served as a manager and an umpire. No matter where Jim worked or whatever activity Jim participated in, he made friends -- lots of them -- until his very last day. He was compassionate, quick-witted, and always there for those who needed help. On May 9, 1948 he married Doris M. Stokes, who preceded him in death on January 28, 2011. She was the love of his life and he looked forward to the day that he would see her again. They enjoyed doing things together, especially traveling the country after he retired. He was an excellent father to his two children who loved him, Jerry (Eunice) Brothers and Jennifer (Ron) Denniston. He was the proud grandfather of Angela Denniston, Shawn Denniston, Gregory Brothers, and Joel (Danielle) Brothers. He was pleased to recently become a great-grandfather of Hezekiah James Brothers and Hannah Lee Brothers. Jim was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Karen (Beck) Brothers; and his sisters, Dorothy Yoder, Ruth Brothers, and Sue Smith. Jim is survived by his siblings, Robert “Bob” Brothers, Karen Deboever, and Richard “Dick” Brothers. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2018 in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 North Main Street, Mishawaka. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11 a.m. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Heritage Point in Mishawaka and the staff at Grace Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Shriners Hospital for Children.
