Julius A. Halasz

SOUTH BEND - Julius A. Halasz, 81, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Friday, September 14, 2012. at Hospice House. Julius was born on November 21, 1930, in South Bend, to Alex H. and Mary (Chiszar) Halasz, and was a lifelong resident. He retired from the South Bend Police Department in 1987 after 30 years of service as a police officer. After retiring from the Police Department, Julius worked at Memorial Hospital for twelve years in the Fire and Safety Department. He then worked for the United State Marshall Service for five years.

On May 11, 1957, in Christ the King Catholic Church, he married Carolyn O. Walsh, who preceded him in death on December 16, 2011. Also preceding him in death were his two sisters, Mary Ann Priester and Joan Zahl. Survivors include his two daughters, Julia (Jeff) Halasz-Tadajewski of South Bend, IN, and Mary Catherine Halasz of Minneapolis, MN; his son, James (Sue) Halasz of Lakeville, IN; one son-in-law, Jay Black of Minneapolis, MN; five grandchildren, Amanda, Hope, Rebecca, Glenn and Alex; one sister, Irene (John) Japa of South Bend, IN; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Ellen Veninga of Tucson, AZ, and Mary Walsh of San Diego, CA; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Dale Walsh of Atlanta, GA, and John Low of Tucson, AZ.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2012, in Holy Cross Catholic Church. Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. today in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. Julius was a member of St. Joseph Parish and F.O.P. #36. He served in the United States Navy from 1951 - 1955.
