Jean Katherine Kuzmits (Golubski)

Jean Katherine (Kuzmits) Golubski

Nov. 28, 1921 - Dec. 20, 2020

SOUTH BEND, IN -

A new angel was added in heaven when Jean K. Golubski entered eternal life on Sunday, December 20, 2020 surrounded by her loving family.

Jean Katherine was born on November 28, 1921 to Frank and Katherine (Jambrich) Kuzmits in South Bend, IN. Jean was the fifth of six siblings. She grew up during the Great Depression, and as a young child learned the value of hard work and dedication to others. Jean graduated from Riley High School, and afterward held a variety of work positions, most notably acting as an escort guide for U.S. Army officials touring the Aviation Plant in South Bend during WWII.

Jean met the love of her life, Benjamin (Ben) Golubski, at a local Catholic singles dance, and they were married on June 15, 1946 in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Jean's sparkling personality, generosity, and positive attitude were her hallmarks. Jean and Ben were excellent dancing partners and shared many happy years of polka dancing with friends and relatives. Jean and Ben, a realtor in South Bend, were devoted parents and raised three children, Becky, Suzanne, and Joe. They were inseparable partners in life, and shared many joys, including cooking special Sunday dinners together, hosting holiday parties for family and friends, and watching ND football together.

Jean also formed a special bond with her beloved sister Rose. Together as best friends, they shared lifelong experiences and were always there for each other. Jean was very proud of her Croatian heritage, and she often spoke the language in telephone conversations with her mother and siblings. She was an outstanding cook, baker, and gardener. Croatian dishes and Hungarian and Austrian pastries were her specialties, and she loved to improvise and add creative touches. She was an avid gardener, with a green thumb. Neighbors and strangers would come by to admire her exceptional flower garden, full of beautiful and colorful annual and perennial flowers. Jean had a keen interest in news, politics, history, nutrition and exercise, and practiced a healthy and fit lifestyle. She also had a special love and instinct for animals and enjoyed raising German Shepherds.

Jean was selfless in her care of others. She and Ben helped raise their granddaughter during infancy and beyond. Jean was a devout Catholic, said the Rosary daily with her husband, and lived a life of prayer, faith and good deeds. Her favorite prayer was “The Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi” and she was an excellent example, as she lived this prayer each day of her life. Jean was a long-standing member of the Rosary & Altar Society at Holy Cross Church, and served as room mother at Holy Cross Grade School.

Jean was predeceased by her loving husband Ben. She is survived by children: Rebecca Golubski Bahu, a retired Coordinator of Branch Services, St. Joseph County Public Library; Suzanne Golubski Herbert, an attorney in NYC; and Joseph Golubski, an accountant working in the Michiana area. Jean was also predeceased by the other members of her Kuzmits family, sisters Julie and Rose and brothers Joe, Frank and Emanual. In addition, Jean is survived by granddaughters Jean Bahu and Maria Bahu, and was predeceased by granddaughter Mona Bahu.

A Mass of Christian Burial in Jean's honor will be celebrated at Holy Cross Catholic Church in South Bend on Wednesday, December 30 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held in the church at 10:00 am prior to the Funeral Mass. The Mass will also be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in South Bend.
