Verna B. (Holdeman) Howe

SOUTH BEND - Verna B. Howe, 93, residing at the Sanctuary at St. Paul's, South Bend, passed away at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2008 in her residence. She was born April 6, 1915 to Lewis & Lovina E. (Grunawalt) Holdeman, in St. Joseph County, IN, on a farm located one mile north of Marshall County and one mile west of Elkhart County between Wyatt and Bremen. She has remained a lifelong resident of St. Joseph County.

She graduated in 1935 from James Whitcomb Riley High School in South Bend.

Then on December 24, 1935 in South Bend, she was united in marriage to Ralph Elmer Howe. He preceded her in death in May 1975. She was also preceded in death by her son, Dale E. Howe on March 20, 2008, a sister, Lois Wright, and three brothers, Nelson, Roscoe, and Boyd Holdeman.

Mrs. Howe retired in 1976 from the Credit Dept. at Sears & Roebuck Co. following more than eighteen years of employment.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Darlene & Gary Graczyk of Granger, a daughter-in-law, Diane Howe of South Bend, and four grandchildren, Pam (Tom) White, Lynn (Mitch) Kajzer, Kellie (Jon) Ireland, and Kris (Rick) Davila. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren, Courtney Kajzer, Tony White, Jacob White, Rick Davila, III, Hailey Davila, Emily Ireland, and Katie Ireland.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Rev. Greg D. Crump will officiate. Arrangements for the Howe family are being made by the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Contributions in memory of Verna B. Howe may be offered to the Sanctuary at St. Paul's, 3602 South Ironwood Drive, South Bend, 46614, or to the donor's choice.
