MISHAWAKA - Nancy Ann "Nan" (Witt) Kovach, 50, of Mishawaka, passed away Friday morning, May 4, 2012, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Nancy, known to many as "Nan," was born October 17, 1961, in Mishawaka. She was the youngest of seven children born to Robert and Sara (Schurz) Witt.

Nan grew up in South Bend and was a 1980 graduate of Riley High School. She received her Bachelor's of Science in Business Degree from Indiana University in 1984.

Nancy married Craig J. Kovach in South Bend on November 10, 1984. The couple has made Mishawaka their home for many years.

Nancy was employed as an administrative assistant for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #153. She was a member of St. Matthew Cathedral Parish in South Bend where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. Nan was known for being a great cook, and loved entertaining and having pool parties. She also enjoyed traveling, swimming and photography. Nan volunteered for church and school activities, and was faithful about attending her son's athletic events. She dearly loved her dogs, Gabby and Zeke. Nancy's family was the center of her life and she was always thinking of others. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Nancy's surviving family includes her husband and best friend, Craig; her son, Drew; her mother, Sara Witt; six siblings, Lynne Barnaby, David (Mona) Witt, John (Teresa) Witt, Kathleen (Paul Romero) Witt, Rebecca (Robert) Martindale and Barbara (Brian) Levan; Craig's family including his parents, Stephen and Rosalie (Datena) Kovach; and his siblings, Nancy Villanueva, Mark (Jill) Kovach and Michaeleen (Jay) Conlee. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews who called her "Aunt Nanny."

Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Robert Witt; a brother-in-law, David Barnaby; and a nephew, Scott Barnaby.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 am in St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, with Rev. Jacob Runyon officiating. Cremation will follow and burial will be at a later date. Friends may spend time with Nancy's family Tuesday from 4 - 8 pm in the Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where a prayer service will be held at 7:45 pm. There will also be a time of visitation Wednesday from 10 - 11 am in the church.

Nancy's family suggests memorials be directed to Susan G. Komen for the Cure or to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County.
