SOUTH BEND - Mary E. Stanfield, 98, of South Bend, passed away Monday, July 20, 2013, in her residence. She was born September 19, 1914, Mary E. Henderson to Walter I. Henderson Sr. and Amelia Henderson (Sells). Mary was preceded in death by her husband, David A. Stanfield, whom she married on October 29th, 1950. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Walter I. Henderson Jr., Hale S. Henderson Sr. and Erle Henderson.

Mary is survived by her nieces and nephews, Hale S. Henderson Jr. (Mary), Nancy Port (Alan), Richard Kirkley (Betsy), David Henderson (Pam), Gene Henderson (Kim), Robert Henderson and Karen Lower (David). She is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews along with several great-great-nieces and nephews.

After attending Riley High School where she was a member of the very first graduating class, she worked for the Associates Loan and Investment Company. She was to remain an employee until her retirement in 1968. During that time she rose from a worker in the collections department to become the secretary to Douglas Campbell, then president of the Associates. After retirement she worked a short time at the University of Notre Dame. After Notre Dame she was employed as a personal assistant to Mr. & Mrs. Judd Leighton and remained employed at the Leighton office until her 95th birthday.

During her lifetime Mary enjoyed golf, playing bridge, traveling and a great number of other social activities. She was a longtime member of the Eastern Star. Mary was known throughout her life as a generous, caring individual who would go out of her way to insure the happiness of others. She would insist on laughing often, insuring that someone could breathe a little easier because she touched their lives. She will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a. m. Saturday, August 3, 2013, at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., with Rev. Bob Lewis and Chaplain Ed Wilsberg officiating. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 2nd, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
