SOUTH BEND - John L. Stull, 91, of South Bend, died at 7:55 a.m. Saturday, May 19, in Memorial Hospital. John Stull was born October 30, 1915, in Epworth Hospital, South Bend, the son of Lloyd W. Stull and Florence Zilky.

He graduated from Riley High School in 1933 where he played varsity football.

He and the former Jean E. von Hoene, his loving wife of 70 years, were wed April 16, 1937, at St. James, where he served many years as a Boy Scout leader, as a vestry member and as part of an informal team of laymen who helped keep cathedral property in good repair. Mr. Stull also was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He retired in 1980 from Wheelabrator-Frye where he served a 20-year career as a structural steel engineer. Prior to Wheelabrator, he was employed at Edwards Iron Works and Fabricated Steel. He was an avid golfer, angler, hunter and marksman and a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association. Among his many avocations in life were metal crafting, painting, design, engineering and gunsmith.

Surviving him are his widow, Jean E. Von Hoene Stull; two daughters, Patricia Anne Snyder of Mishawaka, IN, and Jane Lyn Payne (Scott) of Muskegon, MI; six grandchildren, Andrew Snyder of Sarasota, FL, Amy Snyder of Manhattan Beach, CA, Karen Jimenez (Luis) of South Bend, Theresa Riek (Larry) of Rockford, MI, Laura (Troy) Ter Veen of Traverse City, MI, and Lee Bulson of Muskegon; six great-grandchildren, Amanda and Andrew Degner of Rockford, Zechariah Ter Veen of Traverse City, Lilianna and Natalia Jimenez of South Bend, and Michael Masar of Muskegon; a sister-in-law, Ruth Stull of Dowagiac, MI; and four nephews, Thomas Stull (Rosemary) of Decatur, Edward Stull (Meg), Charles Stull (Reba) and Kenneth Stull (Debra), all of Dowagiac.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Stull of Dowagiac, and by a nephew, Robert Stull Jr.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, May 23, in the Episcopal Cathedral of St. James, 117 N. Lafayette, South Bend, where friends may visit one hour prior to the services. A luncheon will follow at 1 p.m. for friends and family at the church. Burial will be held at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
