Thomas Charles Anders

Thomas C. "T.A." Anders

March 14, 1946 - Nov. 24, 2012 SOUTH BEND - Thomas Charles (T.A.) Anders, 66, of South Bend, IN, passed away quietly at his brother's home in North Liberty, IN, early Saturday morning, November 24, 2012, after a long illness. He was born March 14, 1946, in South Bend, IN, to the union of LeRoy and Florence Anders, both of whom preceded him in death in 1998.

Tom had attended Oliver Elementary and Riley High School. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He received the Purple Heart due to shrapnel injuries sustained during combat.

He hired into Steel Warehouse in 1968, where he held the position of shipping foreman. In 2001, after 33 years of service, he hung up his hard hat and retired. Because of his years of commitment and loyalty, a ceremony was held in his honor dedicating the east shipping area to "Anders Shipping Bay."

His greatest passion was music and singing along to his favorite songs which he knew all the words to! He was an avid White Sox fan for many years and loved "his" Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team.

He is survived by his son, Shane M. Anders of Noblesville, IN; daughter, Nicole R. Anders; grandchildren, Tyler Thomas Eskridge, Ashlynn R. Eskridge and Adrianna J. Wolf, all of Mishawaka, IN; and brothers, LeRoy Anders of Arizona, Rich and (Ruth) Anders of Canute, Oklahoma, Mark and (Bobbi) Anders of North Liberty, IN, and Gerald and (Loretta) Anders of South Bend, IN. He is also survived by his former wife, Debra K. Anders of Mishawaka, IN, who he remained very close friends with.

Thanks to Hospice of St. Joseph County for keeping him comfortable these last few weeks, Raymond D. Conley for always being there for him, Dr. Walter Filipek for 30-plus years of care, and Dr. Stephen McTigue who could always make him laugh.

Visitation will be Friday, November 30th, from 5 - 6:30 p.m., with a memorial service beginning at 6:30 p.m., at Palmer Funeral Home, South Michigan Street location. Cremation has taken place and interment of his ashes will take place at a later date. Anyone who knew Tom couldn't help but like him. He had the biggest heart and never turned anyone away if they needed him. He was always fair, had a great sense of humor, and was a wonderful storyteller! You will be missed so much. Rest peacefully.

Farewell to you my family and friends as I smile and bid goodbye. Shed no tears for I need them not, all I need is your smile. If you feel sad, do think of me for that is what I'd like. When you live in the hearts of those you love, remember you never die.
