SOUTH BEND - Andrew A. Toppel, 90, died after a brief illness on May 7, 2007, in Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, Florida. He was born December 7, 1916, in South Bend, to the late John and Anne Toppel.

He graduated from Riley High School in 1935.

After a number of defense industry positions during the war years, he worked at Covol Manufacturing in Benton Harbor, Michigan, and later began a 25-year career at The Associates. His positions took Mr. Toppel and his family to live in Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky, and for many years in South Bend. He retired as a vice president of the Leasing Group. In 2004 he moved to the Freedom Square Retirement Community in Seminole, Florida.

He married the late Natalee Engle of Hartford, Michigan, who died on July 30, 1994. He is survived by a sister, Helen Wirt of South Bend; a daughter, Judith Kline of Seminole, FL; a son, John Toppel of Los Altos, CA; and a grandson, John Harding Toppel of Portland, OR.

Mr. Toppel was a lifetime member of South Bend Elks Lodge 235, Knights of Columbus, and the Cathedral of St. Matthew.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 18, in the Cathedral of St. Matthew, 1810 S. Miami, South Bend. Interment of cremains will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. today in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd.
