Iness Louise Kistler (Welling)

Iness L. (Kistler) Welling

July 1, 1917 - Mar. 13, 2013
SOUTH BEND - Iness Louise (Kistler) Welling was born in Boswell, Indiana on July 1, 1917 to the late James Madison and Catharine (Moyer) Kistler. Her father's employment with the Studebaker Corporation brought the family to South Bend when she was a child, and she graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School in 1935.

In 1946, she graduated from nurses' training at St. Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka and worked for Dr. Edward Sirlin, who was a well known Pediatrician in Mishawaka and developed "Dr. Sirlin's Bottom Ointment", Phil Myers, and Dean Richards. She retired from nursing in 1989 upon the passing of Dr. Richards.

On June 28, 1946 in South Bend, she married Paul Edward Welling. He passed away on May 31, 1996, exactly 4 weeks before their 50th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Welling was also predeceased by her sister, Margaret Kistler in 1997.

rs. Welling is survived by her only son and his wife, James E. and Martha L. Welling of South Bend; three grandchildren, Anne (John) Pfeil of Granger, James (Rosie) Welling of South Bend and Paul Welling of South Bend; and two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Martha Alsip (children of Anne). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Mary Poczik, who kept her company and took her Holy Communion for the last several years. Mrs. Welling cherished her family and the holidays always were very special to her.

When Paul was still alive, the two of them could be found at Hudson Lake during the summer months. The summer months also found her rooting on the Chicago Cubs and she loved watching football, especially the Chicago Bears and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. She spent countless Friday nights going to Riley High School football games and watching her son play with the band when he was in school, and a generation later she did the same thing watching her grandchildren play with the band. Even when she turned 95, she could still sing the Riley High School Fight Song.

Mrs. Welling was a member of Valley Chapter No. 594, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Order of the Rebekkahs, where she was a Past Noble Grand.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at the Sanctuary at St. Paul's in South Bend, and Center for Hospice and Palliative Care for ensuring her comfort in her final weeks.

Funeral services will be held at 7 PM Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, where friends may visit two hours prior to services on Sunday. Memorial donations may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 2211 N. Oak Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60707 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be sent to the Welling Family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
