Joseph G. Callahan

Callahan, Joseph G., 88, of Fort Lauderdale, FL passed away on February 8, 2008. On February 15, 1943 he married D. Patricia Ross of St. Albans, NY. She preceded him in death in November 1987. They were married for almost 45 years. He is survived by his daughter Joanne (James) Hayes of Huntsville, AL and a son Thomas (Judith) Callahan of Granger, IN. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Jeffrey Hayes of Tuscaloosa, AL, Jennifer (Jason) Melhiser of Florence, AL, Blake Callahan of Flagler Beach, FL, and Bradford Callahan of Granger, IN. Joe was born April 27, 1919 in Dowagiac, MI. His parents were Thomas J. Callahan and Mary Daly Callahan. Joe, was the fourth of four children. He is preceded in death by his parents as well as his sisters, Loretta (and her husband, Tony Wirry) and Katherine (Kate) and his brother, John (and his wife, Mary Zablocki).

He graduated from the University of Notre Dame (ND) in 1941. He was a philosophy major at ND. He joined the Navy as the United States entered WWII. He was a Lieutenant (J.G.) and was stationed in Jacksonville, FL.

In 1966 he began work on his master's degree at Notre Dame and began teaching in the South Bend Community School Corporation at Muessel School. He later transferred to Riley High School and finished his teaching career at Adams High School.

Subsequent to his wife's death he moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL. He volunteered at Holy Cross Hospital and was active in the Notre Dame Alumni Club.

The family will receive friends in the Funeral Home (today) Wednesday, February 13th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, February 14th, at 10:00 a.m., Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Oakland Park, FL, with burial to take place at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka, IN. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Blessed Sacrament Parish. Arrangements by Baird-Case Jordan-Fannin Funeral Home, 4343 N.
