SOUTH BEND - Inga Solvig (Magnuson) Damp, of South Bend, passed away at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2009 in The Elkhart Center for Hospice & Palliative Care of natural causes. Inga was born in Lund, Sweden on December 17, 1920 to Astrid and Mauritz Magnuson. She came to the United States from Sweden with her mother and sister, Elsa in 1929. Her father came over from Sweden six years before to work as a tool and die maker at Studebaker and establish a home for his family.

She entered Centre Township School, not knowing a word of English and won the school spelling bee the first year she was in school. Inga graduated from Riley High School in June 1940.

She worked in the payroll departments at Ball Band, Sears Roebuck and Wheelhorse. In 1944, she married Charles "Fred" McCord. Out of their union, a daughter and son were born. In October 1968, she married Herman C. Damp. He preceded her in death October 2007. Inga lived in South Bend most of her life. She was a former member of Ridgedale Presbyterian Church and taught both Sunday school and Bible school for many years. She and Herman and their dachshunds belonged to the H.T.C., a traveling club and traveled extensively throughout the USA with their dachshund, Teddy. They camped at Foxwood Hills, Middlebury, IN for over thirty three years. Inga loved camping, gardening and her dachshund.

Her parents, sister, Elsa, brother in law, Ed VanderHagen, son-in-law, John Parker and her aunts and uncles all preceded her in death.

Surviving Inga, are her daughter, Diane Parker of Elkhart, IN; son, Michael (Gail) McCord of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Amy Morton of Elkhart, IN, Matthew Parker of Toledo, OH, Jennifer McCord of Columbus, OH, Kelly (Ben) Hancock of Columbus, OH; great granddaughter, Parker Morton and great grandson, Reid Morton, both of Elkhart, IN; sister-in-law, Florence Wilhelm and her dachshund, "Lucky". She will especially be missed by Lucky, who always sat on Inga's lap when she read the paper.

A Memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 16, 2009 in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend, IN. Rev. Don Neely will officiate. As per her wishes, Inga will be cremated. She will join Herman at Riverview Cemetery. Remembrances of Inga can be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 22579 Old U.S. 20 E., Elkhart, IN 46516 or to the Pet Refuge, 2300 W. 6th Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544.
