Michael Dworecki

March 7, 1948 - Oct. 10, 2012
SOUTH BEND - Father, Brother, Son, Teacher and Friend, Mike Dworecki, 64, of South Bend, passed away surrounded by loving family on October 10, 2012, at Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 7, 1948, to Joseph and Virginia (Stopczynski) Dworecki. An Army veteran, Mike earned a Master's Degree in Special Education from Indiana University. The students he taught ranged from severely handicapped children at Northern Indiana State Hospital to teens gaining life skills to adult learners.

He taught for 36 years in the South Bend Community School Corporation, most recently at Riley High School, and retired in May of this year. Mike was active in many volunteer and community organizations including The Hospice and Palliative Care Center of St. Joseph County, Walk MS, teaching GED classes for VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), and tutoring adults in reading at The Literacy Council. Following family tradition, he served as an usher at St. Anthony de Padua Church for 15 years, where he was a longtime parishioner.

An enthusiastic fisherman, Mike was happiest when perch, bass or bluegills were biting at Eagle Lake, Diamond Lake, or Lake Wawasee. Having been a softball umpire for 10 years, he liked sports and was an avid Notre Dame football fan. He traveled around the U.S., and had recently completed several international trips. An American history buff and gardener, Mike leaves a large circle of friends, family, and students who had the happiness to share in his fun-loving life.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Dworecki. Survivors include his mother, Virginia; his sisters, Judy (John) Lehner, Anne (Jim) Aitchison and Mary (Greg) Miller; his daughters, Julie (Paul) Harwood and Amie Dworecki; son, Victor (Pam) Fisher; four grandchildren, with one great-grandchild on the way, in addition to several nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 20th, at St. Anthony de Padua Church, 2310 E. Jefferson Blvd. in South Bend, with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Hospice and Palliative Care Center of St. Joseph County, St. Anthony de Padua Church, or The South Bend Education Foundation. Elkhart Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements.
