NILES - Darlene J. "Freddie" Fred, 77, of South Sixteenth Street In Niles, MI, died at 11:08 a.m. Sunday, March 8, 2009, in her home following an extended illness. She was born on August 23, 1931, in South Bend, Indiana, to Harry and Delcie (Johnson) Harris.

She attended Riley High School in South Bend and moved to Niles in 1958.

Darlene was formerly employed by the Silverbrook Manor Nursing Home, Brandywine Elementary and Saint Joseph Bank in South Bend. She was an avid bowler at White Bowling Leagues.

On April 12, 1958, in Niles, she married Lowell E. "Sonny" Fred, who survives. In addition to her husband she is survived by her daughters, Jill A. Jackmovich and Julie L. Rudolph; granddaughters, Erin Rudolph and Makayla Jackmovich, all of Niles; sister, Judy Link of Mishawaka, IN; and close friends, Connie Lierley, Fran and Bill Meddars, and Marie Kish.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Michelle Lee Fred, who died at birth, a brother, Larry Harris, and a sister, Rose Click.

Funeral services for Darlene J. Fred will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with Pastor Janis Corredo of Niles officiating. Interment will be at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Niles. The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 10 a.m. today at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Darlene may be made to the Berrien County Cancer Service or to Hospice at Home.
