Evelyn A Siddles (Kirschner) - Class Of 1940 VIEW PROFILE

EVELYN A. (SIDDLES) KIRSCHNER

HALLOWELL -- Evelyn Ann Kirschner, 90, of Granite Hill Estates and formerly of Kling Street in Augusta, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at the VA Medical Center, Togus, of complications from pneumonia, following a long illness. She was born on Sept. 2, 1920, in South Bend, Ind., the daughter of the late Lloyd and Catherine (Vanderheyden) Siddles.

She graduated from South Bend's Riley High School in 1940, and was employed as a private secretary by Lumberman's Insurance Co.

In 1942, Evelyn enlisted in the Navy and was a member of Hunter College training program's first class of Navy Waves. She was assigned to Bunker Hill Naval Air Station in Peru, Ind., where she met her husband, Vincent Kirschner.

After the war ended, Evelyn completed her service at Great Lakes Training Center with an honorable discharge in 1946. She and Vincent married in April 1946 in South Bend, and moved to Augusta. Shortly afterwards, she went to work for the Central Maine Power Co. and then for the IRS. In 1949, she became a full-time homemaker, with the birth of her first son, Joseph, in 1950.

Evelyn was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta and St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church of Naples, Fla.

She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for more than 50 years, the Augusta Country Club and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Evelyn had many interests including golf, tennis and poetry. She was an excellent bridge player, an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed cooking and reading. Evelyn loved spending time with her husband and traveling. Family was very important to her. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Kirschner is survived by her husband of 66 years, J. Vincent Kirschner, of Hallowell; a daughter, Mary Chase, and her husband, Jobie, of Exeter, N.H.; two sons, Joseph Vincent Kirschner Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Windsor, Colo., and Robert C. Kirschner and his wife, Leslie, of Norfolk, Mass.; four grandsons, Peter Kirschner, Tory Chase, Douglas Kirschner and Scott Kirschner; a granddaughter, Kasey Kirschner; a sister, Virginia Nix, of South Bend; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. Burial will be in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Pelton Hill, Manchester.

The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at Maine Veterans' Home on Cony Road and the VA Medical Center at Togus for the outstanding care Evelyn received.
