Cecil Simmons

SOUTH BEND - Cecil Lily Simmons, residing in South Bend, passed away at 4:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Regency Place. She was 96 years old. She was born September 15, 1912 in Anderson County, Tennessee, the daughter of George Washington & Sadie Katherine (Ezell) Loy, and has been a resident of South Bend most of her life. For many years she lived on Miller Road, and in more recent years was a resident at Fairington Apts.

On February 25, 1930 in South Bend, as Cecil Loy, she was united in marriage to Carl Simmons. He preceded her in death on March 20, 1961. She was also preceded by a son, Mark Simmons in 1963. Two daughters, Sue Bunch of Mishawaka, and Nancy Newell of South Bend survive her. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, twenty-one great-great grandchildren, and one great-great-great grandchild.

Mrs. Simmons was a graduate of Riley High School.

She worked at the former Ball Band in Mishawaka, and was a self-employed housekeeper for many years. She was a longtime member of South Side Church of God. Sister Simmons loved children and her church. She taught in the children's Sunday School faithfully for more than fifty years. She was also a member of the Women of the Church of God, the Speeder's, and the Ambassador Sunday School Class, all at the Church.

Services honoring the life of Cecil Simmons will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2009 at South Side Church of God, 7351 U.S. 31 South, South Bend. Rev. Greg D. Crump and Rev. Randy Kerr will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Monday at the Church. The Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend is assisting the Simmons Family with arrangements. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Simmons may be offered to South Side Church of God, 7351 U.S. 31 South, South Bend, IN 46614.
