Edith Lorraine Steele

Feb. 26, 1895 – Nov. 3, 1970

 

Miss Edith Lorraine Steele, of 740 E. Woodside Ave., died at 12:35 a.m. today in Healthwin Convalescent Center after an illness of 18 months.

She retired in 1965 as a teacher with the South Bend Community School Corp. Born in St. Joseph County, she resided here all of her life.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Flack of South Bend and Mrs. John R. Travis of Walkerton.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Forest G. Hay and Sons Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Rev. Louis Reynolds, pastor of Hyde Park United Methodist Church, Hammond, officiating. Mr. Reynolds is a former pupil of Miss Steele. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Miss Steele earned her B.S. and M.S. at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and took graduate studies at the University of Chicago. She taught at Walkerton High, Franklin, Elder, Muessel and Riley High Schools. She was a member of Pi Lambda Theta, Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Indiana and National Retired Teacher’s Associations, American Speech and Hearing Association and Grace United Methodist Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph Count Chapter of the Tuberculosis League.
