Curtis "Curt" D. Neiswender

August 21, 1921 - April 24, 2015

Curtis “Curt” Neiswender, 93, of South Bend passed away on Friday April 24th at Hubbard Hill Retirement Community in Elkhart Indiana.

 He was born on August 21, 1921 in North Liberty, IN to the late Roy R. and Minnie B. (McCannon) Neiswender.  He attended Center Township School, Riley High School and graduated from Greene High School in 1939.  In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp and fought in WWII, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam.  He served in the U.S. Marine Corp for 24 years retiring in 1966 as a 1st Sergeant.

On June 21, 1980 in South Bend he married the former Carolyn J. Simon (Basham- Surguy) who survives.

He is also survived by three sons, Gregory D. (Peggy) Neiswender of Fair Oaks, CA, Kevin R. (Lorri) Neiswender of Laguna Beach, CA, and Michael C. (Carla) Neiswender of Fullerton, CA; two step-daughters, Patricia A. Surguy of Wellston, MI and Marlene S. (Philip) Korenstra of Bristol, IN; one step-son, William B. (Claudia) Surguy of Plymouth, IN; thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Curt was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Daniel L. Neiswender who was killed in Vietnam in 1968, two sisters, Marian Naragon and Agnes Smith and four brothers, Russell, Richard, Clayton and Herman Neiswender.

He was a lifetime member of the Greene Township Lions Club and a member of the Southside Baptist Church in South Bend.  Curt loved to work on small engines, cutting trees, sawing wood and serving others.

Visitation will be held Monday April 27th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Hanley and Sons “Southwest Chapel” Funeral Home located at 23421 State Rd 23/Ireland Rd, South Bend.  Funeral Services will be Tuesday April 28th at 11:00 AM at Southside Baptist Church located at 1130 East Jackson Road, South Bend, with Pastor Scott Smith, Pastor Ken Fetter and Dr. Al Buetler officiating.  Friends may visit one hour prior to services.  Burial will follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery in South Bend.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Southside Baptist Church, 1130 East Jackson Road, South Bend, IN 46614 or Greene Township Lions Club, c/o Hanley and Sons Funeral Home, 23421 State Road 23, South Bend, IN 46614.                       

A special “thank you” is extended to the entire staff at Hubbard Hill, for the compassionate and excellent care provided to Curt during his illness.
