Thomas (Tommy) L. Metcalfe

February 10, 1942 ~ October 23, 2023

Thomas (Tommy) Lyle Metcalfe, 81, of South Bend passed away on Monday October 23, 2023 at Riverside Village in Elkhart, IN.

Tommy was born on February 10, 1942 in Evansville, IN to Thomas and Martha (Isham) Metcalfe, both of whom preceded him in death.  Also preceding him in death were three brothers: Steven, Patrick, and Timothy, a sister-in-law, Sue (Mike) Metcalfe, and a nephew, T.J. Metcalfe.

Tommy is survived by 4 brothers: Michael (Mary Shandley), James (Debbie), Ronald (Cathy), and Randall (Jeane) Metcalfe and two sisters:, Jane Dyszkiewicz (Carl) and Sherry Hendricks (Gary), as well as two sisters-in-law, Sandra (Pat) and Barbara (Tim) Metcalfe, as well as many nieces and nephews. 

In 1949, the family moved from Evansville to South Bend and Tommy grew up on the south side of town on Kern Road.  He was well known in Centre Township for helping to deliver papers for the family’s paper route, along with mowing lawns and shoveling snow for several neighbors.  He especially enjoyed playing basketball in the driveway with his brothers and brothers-in-law and visiting with his family and friends.

Tommy’s real love was music.  He had a “Juke box” that held 300 CD’s.  He used that device to make recordings of various songs for family and friends.  His memory for music was remarkable.  Tommy knew the names of hundreds of songs along with the artists who performed them.  He regularly attended dances at St. Paul’s Life Plan Community in South Bend while living there from 2010 until 2022.

Tommy attended Centre Township School and Riley High School.  He was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church and of Alcoholic’s Anonymous where he was proud to be sober for over 40 years.

Visitation will be held from 5pm-7pm on Sunday October 29, 2023 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend.  A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am on Monday October 30, 2023 with 30 minutes of visitation prior to the service at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Rd. South Bend.  Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Lakeville. 

Memorial Contributions in Tommy’s name may be sent to Southern Care Hospice or to the American Diabetes Association.
