Obituary for Barbara K. (Knoll) May | Palmer Funeral Homes
Barbara K. May, 86, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2023, in Granger, Indiana, with her daughters by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth L. May, and is survived by her daughter Jo (Ken) McCoy of South Bend, her daughter Lee (Steve) Gipson of Indianapolis, her grandson, Maximilian McCoy of Bloomington, Indiana, and her sister, Carolyn Wilson of Columbia City, Indiana.
Barbara was born on June 20, 1937, in Huntington, Indiana, to the late Frederick G. and Elsie (Shuck) Knoll. She earned a degree in Business Management from Indiana University Bloomington in 1959, followed by a master's degree from Indiana University South Bend in 1982. On September 2, 1961, Barbara married Kenneth L. May, in a ceremony held in Huntington. Kenneth passed on July 9, 1992.
Barbara was a teacher with South Bend Community Schools, where she taught business courses at Adams, LaSalle, and Riley High Schools. Her dedication to her students earned her the admiration of her peers and the gratitude of the many lives she touched.
Beyond the classroom, Barbara was an avid reader, maintaining a meticulous card file on all the books and authors she had read over the last several decades. After retiring, she volunteered for Indiana Legal Services and served on the board of the Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County for nearly 20 years.
Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023,from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home – River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend. Barbara will be laid to rest next to her husband at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park in a private burial.
