Gary Lee Eliott

March 20, 1939     ~     May 21, 2021

Heaven needs to leave a wide berth as Retired Navy Master Chief Musician Gary Lee Elliott joins his shipmates who have passed before him. Gary Elliott served as a percussionist with the United States Navy Bands for the majority of his 30 years of Naval Service. He served with distinction as the Chief in Charge of the Navy Concert Band, Director of the "Commodores," the United States Navy Band's jazz ensemble, Specialty Groups Division Officer, Collateral Auditions Supervisor, and performed for every president from 1965 until his retirement in 1989. His career performance and "can do" spirit contributed to his receiving the Meritorious Service Award from President Clinton in 1989.

Born March 20th, 1939 in Elkhart, Indiana to C. Devon and Marilyn Elliott. Died May 21st, 2021 in Lakeland, Florida. He was a graduate of Riley High School, attended Indiana and South Florida Universities, and taught percussion at Depauw University. He had performed with dance bands led by Warren Covington, Tex Beneke, Ralph Flanagan, Fred Waring, Jr., and others. He also appeared with the New Orleans Symphony and the Airmen of Note Air Force Band.

He was a GREAT! son, brother, father, husband, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He leaves behind his wife of 30 years Constance, sister Suzanne, sons Douglas and Brent, grand-children Elijah, Riley, Makenna, Justin, Wyatt, Leighton, Reese, two great-grand-children, many beloved nieces and nephews, and dog Lucy.

His loves were music, family, positivity, fast cars, poker, Redskins Football, any Tampa based sports team, golf, Sunny Italy, dogs, vodka, and iced coffee. Gary was a good friend to anyone he met and if you knew him you know that to be an understatement. This leader of the band will be missed by many.
